In order to import a car into Canada, you have to prove that the car is 15 years old or older. The Japanese car auctions use the date of first registration in Japan for the year of the car, so you will sometimes find with cars such as BMWs or Mercedes that the date of manufacture might have been a number of months prior to this. In this case we will be happy to note the manufacture date on the invoice so that you can import the car earlier than the first registration date would normally permit.
For example, you might see a Mercedes in the auction that has a first registration date that means it will not be 15 years old until 4 months from now. Obviously you don’t want to buy it and then have to hold it back a couple of months while you wait for it to be old enough for importing under the 15 year rule. However, by researching the VIN number using an online VIN decoder website (you can find some on our resources page here), you discover that the car was actually made 3 months prior to the date of first registration in Japan, which means that you would be able to import it one month from now. In this case we will be happy to supply an invoice that notes the manufacture month and year in addition to the month and year of first registration so you can import it early.
Periodically there are suggestions that the 15 year rule is about to be changed to be 25 years. These rumors tend to occur at the end of the year. Although there does seem to have been some government-level discussion, thus far it has yet to lead to any concrete changes being made.
