RORO Shipping

RORO shipping refers to the “Roll-On Roll-Off” car carrier ships that are commonly used to send cars round the world. These ships are like floating car parts. Similar to a car ferry, but bigger and with all the space optimized for transporting vehicles.

The vehicles are not packed, but are driven on and off in exactly the same way as for a car ferry. The result is that the shipping cost is most often calculated based on the volume of the vehicle itself. Usually, this is done buy a direct multiplication of the per cubic meter cost by the volume of the vehicle. In more rare cases, the shipping company will specify “bands” of vehicle volumes with a fixed price for each band.

To give you an example, let’s imagine we have a Toyota Corrola sedan that is almost exactly 10 cubic meters. (This is calculated by simply multiplying the length, width and height in meters.) The fictitious shipping company we are going to use to ship this car to you, Acme Shipping charges $72 USD per cubic meter. In this case, the charge for shipping will be $72 USD * 10 cubic meters = $720 USD.

If Acme is happy with us shipping this car to you FOB, they will charge you this $720 USD in your currency at your end before you can pick up the car. If Acme insists on pre-payment, then they will convert this dollar charge into Yen and charge it to us. We will add it to the total price of the vehicle charged to you.

Now, we will imagine that Acme shipping does not charge per cubic meter, but uses the following bands to calculate shipping for each vehicle:

  1. Up to 12 cubic meters = $1000 USD
  2. 12.01 cubic meters to 15 cubic meters = $1500 USD
  3. 15.01 cubic meters to 20 cubic meters = $2000 USD
  4. Over 20 cubic meters = $3000 USD

In this case, our 10 cubic meter Corolla sedan will fall into the lowest price group, and the shipping charge will be $1000 USD.
