Mazda Atenza (Mazda 6) metamorphosizes

Mazda has unveiled a near-production concept of the car that’s set to replace the Atenza. The 4 door sedan study is called the “Takeri” and will make its public debut at the Tokyo motor show at the end of next month.

Hatchback and estate versions are also under development.

The Takeri (learn that name, it will be a good seller in a few years time in the used car auctions) will also feature the SKYACATIV Technology, plus electric devices such as Mazda’s idling stop system (i-stop), as well as a regenerative braking system, enable the Mazda Takeri to achieve excellent fuel economy. If it is going to be anything like the Mazda Demio2 then who needs environmentally difficult to produce hybrids?

Looking at the design, I would say the Mazda designers crossed a Benz with a Cadillac!

Honda to introduce a new K car, the N Box

Nissan has the cube, Toyota has the Bb, Honda is joining the party, though with the compact Kei series cars (limiting the engine to a max. 660cc) with the N Box. I am not sure what the N stands for, maybe aNother Box!

The car has been modelled on the Honda N360, it’s first foray into the Kei car market in the 1960s.

Looks very boxy and very practical. Let’s hope they bring out a 1000cc version for the export markets. That should be gobbled up in the used car auctions.

Mazda jumps on to the “Black Edition” bandwagon with its Roadster

The Euro-Focus has one, HUMMER has one, Mercedes has one, Porsche has a few of them, Nissan has one, so why shouldn’t Mazda have one too? Introducing the Mazda Roadster black-tuned edition. It went on sale in Japan this week. So why isn’t the car black? Perhaps it is just the roof that is going to be black? And it isn’t just any roof, it is a hard top roof, and not only that, it is a retractable hard top roof! That, according to Mazda, qualifies it for the black-tuned edition. Not enough you may think? OK, let’s throw in some black door mirrors, and some black 17inch alloy wheels (actually metallic grey 17inch alloy wheels, but closer to black than red right?). Not enough black you still think? OK, let’s go inside. How about black leather seats and a black leather steering wheel? No? Well the final touches by Mazda to make this Roadster RS RHT into the official Mazda Roadster black-tuned edition: give them three possible colors, “spirited green metallic”, “velocity red” and “crystal white pearl”. (Yes, no black version! But this is the black version?!).

Buy one new or get one in the auctions soon, again, near new is cheaper than new-new!

Toyota announces release of 2012 Alphard hybrid in Japan

Just with some minor changes from the previous model (change a front grill, bumper …) but with the hybrid motor. The 7 seater Alphard will have a 2.4L 4 cylinder which will deliver 150 PS along with a 105Kw electric engine to help keep the consumption down to 19kms per liter. Comparing this with the 2005 model, it will have a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions. Now that is turning over a new (green) leaf! As the new Alphard model is being released at the end of November, don’t expect to see one of these in the auctions until mid to late December (near-new is always cheaper than new-new!).

Skoda unveils new Volkswagen Up!- based Citigo

The re-badged Volkswagen Up! is called the Skoda Citigo. Choose from 2 1.0L three cylinder engines, one with 59 horsepower and the other with 74 horsepower and a top speed of 170kms/hr. May be not that fast but they are efficient, 23.83km/liter. Not as efficient as the Demio 13 SKYACTIV, but better than the RX-8!

You won’t see one of these appearing in the Japanese used car auctions any day soon as the car won’t appear in Europe until summer 2012.

No plans but a possibility for Honda Civic to return to Japan?

Takanobu Ito, president of Honda, said Honda has no plans to sell the popular Honda Civic in the Japanese market. Sales of the Honda Civic were discontinued in Japan in the summer of 2010, although the release of the new Honda Civic series is planned for Europe in 2012. He did comment that “although there are no plans, there is a possibility”.

So any used honda civic buyers out there. At the moment, you can only buy used honda civics till the 2010 model. After that, no plans but there is a possibility for the newer model. At the least, expect a big hole in the market after the 2010 model.

Japan’s Earthquake … impact on exporting used cars

Anyone who doesn’t know now that there was a major earthquake, one of a magnitude not seen in modern history before, that hit Japan must be quite disconnected from information sources that flow around our globe! If this little blog here is your news source for this earthquake, then there was a very big earthquake that hit north eastern Japan that brought a lot of damage to buildings and infrastructure as well as a large loss of life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the populations of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures who were affected the most.

How does this earthquake affect our used car export business? Will the auctions now be “flooded” with “Tsunami cars” or “radioactive cars”?

First of all, the majority of cars sold in the used car auctions in Japan are sold outside of the areas. I do not foresee a huge impact on these auctions (CAA auctions, USS auctions, JU auctions).

Secondly, the 3 main ports used by Provide Cars in Japan; Osaka (Kobe), Nagoya and Tokyo are still operating. Osaka and Nagoya were not affected at all by the earthquake or by the tsunami. Tokyo’s port reported some cracks but no major damage to the infrastructure. Cars and vehicles stored on the ports were unaffected.

I do see some impact on supply and demand in the auctions however. Used car exporters combined purchase up to 40% of vehicles sold in the auctions each day, a significant amount that affects the prices of vehicles sold. I do foresee a pulling back (fear factor) of demand from overseas as people’s bias towards “tsunami cars” reduces importer’s customer’s demand. This will reduce the number of purchased vehicles in the auctions, effectively balancing reduced supply also to the point of perhaps lowering auction prices.

What should you look out for? Buying from exporters stock. Unfortunately, some exporters will jump at this opportunity to purchase cheap “as is, where is” tsunami damaged vehicles and then sell them off as “good stock”. That creates even more incentive to buy directly from auctions, vehicles that have been carefully judged and accessed by the in-between auction. KNOW WHERE YOUR VEHICLE IS COMING FROM.
