Toyota flooded with orders for the new hybrid Aqua Hatch
The successor to the revolutionary Toyota Prius is to be the Aqua, a small 5 door hatchback. Powered by a 1.5 liter four cylinder gasoline engine rated at 72 horsepower and an electric motor powered at 45 kW, making a combined output of 98 hp. Equipped with the Toyota Hybrid System II with reduction gear, giving it fuel efficiency of 40 km/l.
Entry costs in Japan at 1.69 million yen proves it as an affordable green car for the Japanese market.
With original goals of 12,000 sales a month, pre-orders of 60,000 vehicles have overwhelmed production ability and people will have to wait for their vehicles. Let’s hope there will not be the recall problems that the Prius had. Let’s hope to that we will see some soon in the used car auctions.

Subaru releases BRZ STI concept car
As a companion car to the Toyota FT-86, the BRZ should go on sale in the US (as the Scion FR-S in the Toyota brand for the states) in spring 2012. The final production version should be shown at the Tokyo Auto Show, in December.
The BRZ is slightly shorter and smaller than the WRX.

Toyota iQ with some remodelling
SEMA is the US’s biggest tuner show. 3 remodelled or ‘tweaked’ iQs made their appearance.
Remember the iQ? It was the small car that retired granny would choose to economically do her shopping or visit her grand kids in. Great modern piece of conservative creation by Toyota. Here is the stock standard iQ found in the Toyota showrooms and also found in the auctions in Japan:
Now the inside
Now you have a clear image of what the iQ is and who it is for. Rethink, think iQ as well as EVO, as well as RS, GTR, turbo, .. can you image anything?
How about this:

Toyota FT86
Toyota first revealed the concept version of the FT86 Coupe at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. Since then there have been a lot of rumors, could this be the takeover of the Celica brand?
As per usual in recession environment, the development of the FT86 is a combined work with Subaru. The release date is expected in November 2011. This week the production version of the FT-86 have surfaced on the internet.
You will definitely not find this any day soon in the auctions, you won’t even find it on a new Toyota dealers yard!

Toyota announces release of 2012 Alphard hybrid in Japan
Just with some minor changes from the previous model (change a front grill, bumper …) but with the hybrid motor. The 7 seater Alphard will have a 2.4L 4 cylinder which will deliver 150 PS along with a 105Kw electric engine to help keep the consumption down to 19kms per liter. Comparing this with the 2005 model, it will have a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions. Now that is turning over a new (green) leaf! As the new Alphard model is being released at the end of November, don’t expect to see one of these in the auctions until mid to late December (near-new is always cheaper than new-new!).

John Cooper Works MINI Coupé on sale in Japan from Dec.
BMW announced the sale of its compact coupé Mini “John Cooper Works” starting from December in Japan.
3 Models will be available: Cooper Coupe, Cooper S Coupe and the John Cooper Works Coupe.
The very style 2 seater is also the fastest factory Mini ever. A 1.6L four cylinder engine paired with a 6 speed manual gearbox. A six speed automatic gearbox is also available for the Cooper Coupe and the Cooper S Coupe. The EU standard lists fuel consumption at 18.51 kms/liter. (You know that is not as good as the Demio!)
The 2 faster models add a twin scroll turbocharger and direct-injection to the 1.6 liter engine. In JCW trim, the Coupe has 208 horsepower at 6,000 rpm.
Speeding tickets for all three models: the Coupe breaks the speed limit (except on the Autobahn in Germany) at a max. of 140miles/hr (225kms), the S Coupe 142 MPH (228kms/hr) and the JCW 149 MPH (239 kms/hr).
Perhaps it should try stealing the Toyota Lexus LFA of its Nurburgring title?
Wikileaks details how far Toyota’s problems went
Toyota’s recent troubles weren’t just for it’s customers, dealers, lawyers and bottom line – the shaking also went all the way up through the diplomatic channels. Wikileaks reveals that then-Transportation Minister Seiji Maehara asked that Toyota’s situation not cause “obstacles to trade.”
The treaties between the countries disallow bilateral trade to be affected by the Toyota recalls, and in the words of a Japanese cable to Washington, “For many Government of Japan bureaucrats and Japanese auto executives, any and all auto issues seem to bring back memories of bilateral trade friction in the 1980s and 90s.” That was when sectors like automobiles (including Japanese car auctons), agriculture, steel, textiles and market access were strong sources of friction, retaliation, treaties and new accusations.
Toyota Lexus LFA outspeeds the Nissan GTR at the Nurburgring race track
Toyota doesn’t just make the Prius, they also make the Lexus LFA. So what you may think? What is the LFA, sorry, Lexus LFA? Just a car that kicked the Nissan GT-R R35 off its throne, that used to hold the record for the fastest production car on the German Nurburgring racing track. It broke Nissan’s record by 3 seconds! Wow, 6x the price for 3 seconds!
Toyota does have a major problem with this car however. They built it with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car. It is definitely LHD (left hand drive)! In my British commonwealth country, that means I can’t drive it. I can pretend to, but the reality is that my wife will be on the left hand side of the car driving it for me. After selling my house and all I posses to purchase this Lexus, that will be a big disappointment! What’s more, where do you put the kids, or the supermarket shopping? At least the GTR (apart from the Nurburgring Spec V version) is a 4 seater!
Naah, my house isn’t very close to the Nurburgring race track anyway so I might as well not sell the house and everything else, just take out a loan and buy the GTR instead. At least I will be doing the driving (and not the wife!).

Toyota Mark II Blit or New Mercedes E Class? Styling Miscues
Don’t you sometimes wonder if these car designers are using the same computer programs when sketching out new models? Often it is the Japanese manufacturer for whom imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But in this case, it really seems as though Mercedes have taken their new E Class styling ideas from the lesser-spotted Toyota Mark II Blit.
See if you can spot which is which. Click on each image below to reveal the answer:
Is this the Mercedes?
Or is it this one?
Toyota Hybrids Break 2 Million Barrier - Hybrid Sales Accelerate in Japan
Since first going on sale in August 1997, as of the end of August 2009 Toyota hybrids have now broken the 2 million mark in Japan. The first model that summer was called the Coaster Hybrid EV. I don’t know if anyone really remembers that one! It was not until a few months later in December 1997 that the hyrbid that rocked the world - the Prius - went on sale.
What I think is interesting is that it took until May 2007 for the first million hybrids to be sold here, but since then there has been a real acceleration in sales with mony 27 months for the second million to be sold. The answer is both in the widening of the range of models to which the hybrid technology is applied, as well as an increasing acceptance of the hybrid drivetrain among the buying public.
What we should now be keeping an eye on is whether this acceleration is sustained, or whether the interest in hybrid cars tapers off. This will be a good indication as to whether this is a niche solution or a geniune stepping stone in the evolution of the automobile.
